Are Tibetan Mastiffs Aggressive? (Brave Or Aggressive)

  • Other Dog Breeds
  • Posted 1 year ago

There have been countless attacks by Tibetan Mastiffs, but one in particular drew everyone’s attention. Teddy, a Tibetan Mastiff, attacked three women in 2019 and severely injured them.

Following the horrific attack by the Tibetan mastiff, the judge ordered that Teddy be put down. After hearing the news, the owner of that dog was devastated.

No matter how much you teach them, giant dogs are always tough to control. Yes, some may argue that their dog would never do such a thing to anyone, but the truth is that anything bad can happen at any time.

So, are all Tibetan Mastiffs aggressive? Continue reading to find out the answer!

Are Tibetan Mastiffs Aggressive?

Are Tibetan Mastiffs Aggressive

Tibetan Mastiffs were raised to protect Buddhist temples and monks from predators like bears, mountain leopards, and wolves.

They are without a doubt one of the bravest dog breeds, with a preposterous biting force of 550 PSI, which is enough to severely harm anyone.

Yes, Tibetan Mastiffs are aggressive by nature.

They are more aggressive than English Mastiffs, Great Danes (German Mastiffs), and Neapolitan Mastiffs, but not as aggressive as Bandogs, Kangal Mastiffs, and Presa Canario.

Tibetan Mastiffs are great guard dogs; they are loyal and usually gentle toward people they know, but for intruders and burglars, they are a nightmare.

It’s true that they are an aggressive dog breed, but it’s false that they are always aggressive. They usually only get aggressive when provoked.

Their sheer size and lion-like look can intimidate many people, but a well-trained and socialized Tibetan mastiff can be a great family dog.

Why It’s Important To Socialize Tibetan Mastiffs?

You probably already know that Tibetan Mastiffs are enormous dogs; they can weigh up to 150 pounds and grow as tall as 26 inches. Because of their strength, aggressive nature, and ability to do serious injury with only one bite, it is absolutely essential to socialize them and provide them with the appropriate training.

Your Tibetan Mastiff could get out of control and very difficult to manage if you don’t properly teach him.

Nobody wants a pet dog who is more powerful than they are and won’t listen to them.

Are They Good For First-Time Owners?

To be honest, if you are a first-time dog owner, you should never purchase a Tibetan Mastiff, Kangal, Cane Corso, or Presa Canario, or any huge dog breed.

Begin with a family-friendly dog who is gentle with people and other pets. As examples, consider the Labrador retriever, Golden retriever, Beagle, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

After you’ve had some experience with dogs, you can consider a larger dog breed.

Yes, many people go straight for the huge breed; some regret it, while others do not.

But if you’re a first-time owner, I wouldn’t advise getting a huge breed since there’s a good risk that something will go wrong, and because you’re inexperienced, you’ll have trouble handling your dog.

How to Prevent Your Tibetan Mastiff From Developing Into An Aggressive Dog

According to experts, there are several ways you can take to ensure that your Tibetan Mastiff doesn’t become a dangerous dog. Let’s look at them one by one.

  • Socialization

You may have heard or read about the significance of socializing your dog. Because Tibetan mastiffs are inherently more aggressive, they require early socialization.

Socialization enhances your dog’s confidence while also making them calmer and more comfortable. Experts believe that socializing can help avoid behaviors driven by fear of the unknown.

  • Teaching Boundaries

Boundary training is critical for large dogs because a huge dog, such as a Tibetan Mastiff, might attack or hurt humans and other canines if he is not aware of his boundaries.

  • Meet An Expert

If you have the opportunity to speak with an expert, do so since specialists know exactly how to make your dog more family-friendly.

They may demand a price, but the benefits you will receive will be worth more than the money.

  • Dog Training Classes

Training motivates and rewards a dog for excellent behavior. Positively trained dogs are more patient, self-controllable, and behave consistently in a variety of situations.

There are many great dog training classes available online, You can do your research and enroll yourself in one of them to learn new things.

Are Tibetan Mastiffs Good With Kids?

A trained Tibetan mastiff is typically okay with children, however, I do not advocate allowing your children to be around a Tibetan Mastiff.

Allow your children to approach Tibetan Mastiffs only while you are looking after them.

There are two main reasons why you should not allow your children to approach Tibetan mastiffs. First, Tibetan mastiffs are quite large and may end up injuring your child even if the aim was to play with your child.

Second, as previously said, Tibetan mastiffs are aggressive dog breeds that can become irritated and express hostility.
