English mastiffs were bred as guard dogs in England. They are one of the oldest dog breeds, and every Mastiff breed is related to them in some way; they are the purest Mastiff.

They used to participate in wars and dog fights back in the day. However, English mastiffs are now known for their massive size and loyalty.

They typically get along well with other dogs and small animals like cats and have a calm disposition. However, they still have a guarding instinct, so if an English mastiff senses any threats, he will act right away!

Although English mastiffs are not particularly athletic or active dogs, they still enjoy going for walks or jogs with their owners.

They require a proper meat-based diet to work properly and stay fit.

Furthermore, because they are large dogs with the potential to seriously hurt people, they require adequate training and early socialization.

Weight: 73 to 104 kilograms (160 to 230 lb)

Spanish mastiffs are strong and clever canines. Like English Mastiffs, they are too among the oldest dog breeds.

They were bred for the first time in Spain in the tenth century to protect livestock. Although they initially appear dangerous, these dogs are calm and sociable.

Spanish mastiffs make great family guardians. This breed is a great choice if you’re looking for a large dog that gets along well with people and can defend his family from intruders and attackers.

Weight: 90 to 100 Kilograms (198 to 220lb)

Saint Bernards are one of the cutest dogs in the world. These fluffy giants are extremely friendly, gentle, and tolerant.

Saint Bernards were bred for rescue work in Switzerland in the 1600s. Their calm temperament and amazing looks have made them one of the most popular giant breeds.

However, there are some cons of petting a Saint Bernard as well, and I believe you should be aware of that.

They drool a lot, their drooling problem can present problems to some. Apart from drooling, their medical care is expensive as well.

Weight: 64 to 82 kg (140 to 180 lb)

Great Danes are not just heavy, they are one of the tallest dogs as well. These giant dogs have been featured in many shows and movies. Do you remember Scooby the dog? He was a Great Dane.

Great Danes are excellent family dogs, they are protective, loyal, and active dogs. They can’t spend even a minute without their owners.

However, they occasionally display aggression, particularly when they sense threats. Early socialization and training are crucial.

They are not very round/chubby, their insane height is the reason behind their heavy weight.

They were first bred in Germany in the 1800s as boar-hunting dogs. They are also known as German Mastiffs.

Because of their insane size, they unfortunately have a higher risk of developing conditions like hip dysplasia, ear infections, wobbler syndrome, dilated cardiomyopathy, bloat, and happy tail syndrome.

They need a lot of care.

Weight: 50–82 kg (110–180 lb)

Irish mastiff is a hybrid dog breed (Irish Wolfhound and Mastiff Mix). They are very tall and heavy dogs.

They are gentle and easygoing and love spending their time sleeping on their owner’s lap.

Untrained or unsocialized Irish mastiffs can be aggressive toward other dogs, especially, stray dogs. They are giant dogs, so training them and socializing them becomes crucial.

They are really good guard dogs as well. Sadly, this breed is very rare, you’ll hardly find one.

Weight: 50–82 kg (110–180 lb)

According to AKC (American Kennel Club), “Sweetness of temperament is the hallmark of Newfoundland.”

They are loyal and outgoing, and what sets them apart is their love of swimming. They have no aversion to water. They have excellent swimming skills.

You can go with them if you want a canine friend who can swim well and is calm and collected by nature.

Keep in mind that they struggle in warm environments due to their large size and thick coat. Don’t get yourself Newfoundland if you live somewhere where the daily high is 77 Fernhite or 25 degrees Celsius.

As I previously mentioned, this breed adores the water, so make sure there is a pool or pond nearby.

65–80 kg (143–176 lb)

7: Neapolitan Mastiff

Neapolitan Mastiff is a giant working breed. They were bred in Italy as guard dogs of owner and property.

Their wrinkled face, masculine body, and sheer size catch the attention of many people. They look royal. But the thing is, they drool a lot, so that can be a problem for some people, especially, first-time owners.

Like every mastiff, they too need a lot of attention from their owners. They generally don’t show any aggression towards people and pets, but they can be aggressive, so early socialization and training are important.
