In terms of weight and height, regular cats are nearly ten times smaller than Mastiffs, but they rank equally in terms of bravery. They are both extremely brave!

You might have heard that despite having an enormous size, mastiffs hardly hurt small animals like Cats and Rabbits.

Is there any truth to this? Well, you’ll find out in this post!

Mastiffs are usually calm dogs; they don’t show aggression towards cats and other small animals. They might chase them not with the intention of hurting them but to play with them.

However, training and early socialization are crucial here. A mastiff without training could be dangerous for small animals, kids, and adult beings.

If you haven’t trained your mastiff how to respect cats and other animals yet, it’s better to keep him away from them; otherwise, he may hurt them.

Why Do Mastiff Chase Cats?

There are four reasons why mastiffs chase cats. Let’s look at them one by one.

  • Instinct

Most mastiff breeds were bred for hunting, guarding, and battling. They have an innate desire to chase things that move.

Regular cats are small animals, they know they can’t defeat a large dog so most cats try to run away from them to reach a safe place, and when a cat runs, it kicks your dog’s prey instinct, and the chase begins.

  • They Just Want To Play With Them

Some Mastiffs, especially, puppies chase cats with the intent of playing. You can tell a difference between a sinister chase and a playful chase.

Mastiff puppies look at cats as a toy. Remember, an adult cat can hurt mastiff puppies as cats don’t appreciate the game of chase.

Your cat’s paws can scratch the puppy. So always look after your puppies whenever they go close to your cat.

  • They Are Protecting Their Territory

Some mastiffs may chase or bark at cats as they see them as intruders. Mastiffs as I said are guard dogs, they are protective of their territory.

Untrained mastiffs don’t like living with other animals, they would just want the intruder to leave as soon as possible. The more they stay with them, the more aggressive the mastiff will get.

  • Way To Release Boredom

This is another reason why mastiffs chase cats. Mastiffs are usually lazy dogs. They sleep about 16 hours a day, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t feel bored.

They do feel bored and to release that boring feeling, they may start chewing bedsheets, playing with their favorite toys, or chasing cats (with the intention of playing).

Are Mastiffs Puppies Good With Cats?

The question should be, “Are cats good with mastiff puppies or not?”

Puppies are very innocent; all they want to do is eat, sleep, and play as much as they can, but cats are not like this. They are much more tranquil than dogs.

Puppies can irritate cats, which may result in cats attacking them. If puppies annoy them too much, they may scratch or bite them.

It’s better to keep puppies away from them, but if you want them to become friends, then make sure to increase the bonding between them gradually.

Cats need some time to adjust to a new puppy or dog in the home. Therefore try not to aggravate your cat too much with pups.

Mastiff Breed Who Are Good With Cats

  • English Mastiff

They are the biggest dog breed, they might look aggressive, but they are very polite and respectful to other animals. They get along with cats very well if they are introduced at a young age.

However, proper training is needed as an English mastiff is a huge dog, which means, even if they just want to play with your kitten, they may still end up hurting them.

  • Great Dane

Great Danes a.k.a German mastiffs are very humble giant dogs. They become famous because of their tall stature, the movie Scooby Doooby Doo, and their gentle nature.

Like English mastiffs, they also don’t show much aggression towards small animals such as cats and rabbits. Again, proper training is crucial before introducing any cat to them.

  • Neapolitan Mastiff

Neapolitan Mastiffs are the purest mastiff. They have wrinkled/droopy faces and they look super cute. Like English Mastiffs and Great Danes, they are huge dogs too, they can weigh up to 150lbs.

They are seldom aggressive, they usually get along with cats. However, they are not as calm as English mastiffs and Great Danes.

  • Bullmastiffs

If you like Bulldogs, you’ll like Bullmastiffs too. They look like Bulldogs but with a bigger stature. They are nice too, but they can be aggressive. They need a lot of training before you introduce any other pet to them.

Conclusion

Mastiffs are usually very calm dogs and they get along with cats and other animals well. But they need proper training.

If you don’t train them enough, they can be really aggressive and might hurt small animals such as cats, and they can hurt humans as well.

Mastiffs are not recommended for first-time owners as they can be hard to train, and they are huge dogs.

Now, if you are planning to bring a pet cat and you already have one mastiff in your house, then make sure that your mastiff has a cool and composed nature.

To check how calm your mastiff is, you can take him for a walk and introduce him to other dogs. See how he reacts, if he reacts positively.

It indicates that he might get along with the cats as well, but he reacts aggressively, it’s better to first train your mastiff and then bring any other animal to your home.
