Mastiffs are amazing, their huge size and loving nature make them one of the best breeds.

However, petting a mastiff is not easy as there are many mastiffs who have temper issues and can be really hard to train and control, but thankfully, there are 9 mastiffs who are great and love spending their time with people.

In this post, however, I’m gonna share a list of 9 mastiff breeds you can go for if you have some sort of experience with canines.

1: English Mastiff

English Mastiff

English mastiffs are the largest dogs. They can weigh up to 230 pounds and grow as tall as 30 inches. They might look imposing and aggressive at first look, but they are in fact one of the most gentle and loving dogs.

English mastiffs were bred for dog fight and guarding, they still have that guarding and fighting spirit, but they are more of a cute loving pet now.

Early socialization is important with this breed as they can be aggressive and overly protective. Overall, English mastiffs are our first choice if you are looking for a giant dog that has cool nature and doesn’t need a lot of exercises.

2: Korean Dosa Mastiff

Korean Dosa Mastiff

This is a rare dog breed. A puppy of a Korean mastiff could cost 300,000$, yes you read it right. They are one of the most expensive dog breeds.

They have droopy faces which make them appear super cute. Apart from their amazing look, they are great companions too.

They love their owner a lot, in fact, they get very close to their owners, so they are prone to separation anxiety.

If you can afford a Korean Mastiff you must do so, they won’t disappoint you. Another thing is that they drool a lot, so be aware of that.

3: Great Danes

Great Danes AKA German Mastiffs are famous for their tall stature and gentle nature. They are originally from Germany. They were bred as boar-hunting dogs in the 1800s.

Despite being tall and powerful, they are one of the most loyal and friendly dog breeds. However, they are prone to health issues such as bloat, Cardiomyopathy, Joint & Bone Disease, and Thyroid Problems.

Great Danes can be good watchdogs, but because of their polite nature, they probably won’t bite an intruder.

Also, even though Great Danes are playful, affectionate, and good with children, it is still recommended to keep them away from children as Great Danes are too powerful for them. They might hurt kids unintentionally.

Furthermore, they need a lot of exercise to stay fit and healthy, so if you are a busy person, they might not be a suitable choice for you. They need someone who can take them for a walk or jog daily.

4: Newfoundland

If you are looking for a dog who doesn’t fear water and loves swimming. This breed could be the best choice for you.

Newfoundland is a large working dog breed. They get along well with other dogs and children. However, they too need proper training and early socialization.

The most interesting part about this breed is that they don’t fear water. They love bathing and jumping in a pond or pool. However, they do drool a lot, and in the spring and fall seasons, Newfoundland shed a lot as well. So you have to keep these two things in mind before going for a Newfoundland puppy.

They need a big space as well. They are not small dogs. Keeping them in a small house or a place where no space is available to roam around, can make them lazy and prone to some health issues.

5: Dogue de Bordeaux

Dogue de Bordeaux AkA French Mastiff is a very famous dog breed. They are friendly and loving companions.

They are one of the oldest dog breeds as well. They were first bred 12th century in France as hunting dogs. They used to hunt animals such as pigs, boars, and even wolves and bears.

They are not high-energy dogs as they are huge. They can weigh up to 150 pounds and grow as tall as 27 inches.

40 to 45 minutes of walking daily is enough for them.

Dogue de Bordeaux doesn’t live long. They only have a life span of max 8 years.

6: Tosa Inu

Tosa Inu

Tosa Inu is a giant Japanese breed, known for their courage and affection towards their owner. They were bred in Japan in the 19th century, and like The Korean Dosa Mastiff, they too are rare and expensive.

Fun fact, there is a coin in the name of Tosa Inu. I don’t know why, I just find it really funny!

They usually have a calm and composed nature, but they can be angry at times. They are overall good guards and family dogs.

7: Tibetan Mastiff

Tibetan Mastiff

On the number seven, we have a Tibetan mastiff. They look quite intimidating, but the reality is a bit different.

Yes, they are not very kind towards intruders or burglars, but when it comes to being a protective, loving, and loyal companion, they are one of the best.

Tibetan Mastiff’s big thick coats and huge bodies, give them a look similar to Lions. They are becoming popular day by day.

However, before going for them, make sure you have a lot of space as this breed likes to roam around and play. They need moderate exercise. If there is a mountain near your place, take them there as they love tracking.

8: Boerboel

Boerboel or South African Boerboel love their human families. Like Tibetan Mastiffs, they too can look intimidating due to their huge size and angry look, but they are actually quite gentle and caring.

In terms of how affectionate they are towards their family, the AKC (American Kennel Club) gave them a solid five out of five.

They are good with kids as well.

9: Bullmastiff

These short nose mastiffs are very pretty. They have short tails which makes them even cuter. Now, when it comes to how good they are with kids and family members, I can confidently say that they are very protective and love spending their time with their human family members.

They look kinda like Bulldogs but with a bigger size. They can be aggressive as well, especially, towards intruders, strangers, and stray dogs. So keep this in mind.
