Drooling is a big problem in mastiffs. Some people avoid petting mastiffs because of drooling problems.

Well, no matter what you do, it’s impossible to stop a mastiff from drooling completely, but there are some mastiffs who drool less compared to others.

In this post, this is what we are going to discuss. 7 Mastiff breeds that drool very little.

So stick to the post because you are gonna learn a lot of things, plus I’ll also share details about my personal favorite mastiff.

Let’s dive right into it!

1: Dogo Argentino

Dogo Argentinos are one of the strongest and bravest mastiffs. They are loyal, they are lovely, and they are very protective.

The awesome thing about Dogo Argentino is that they don’t drool a lot.

You may find them drooling occasionally, especially, when the food is closer to them or if they are feeling hungry.

But you won’t find those long drools coming out of their mouths even if they are feeling very hungry.

Furthermore, heavy drooling in Dogo Argentino is rare, so if your Dogo Argentino is drooling a lot without any reason, it might mean they are sick. Seek your nearest veterinarian for help!

2: Broholmer

Broholmer is a Danish dog breed. These brown massive dogs are known for their courage and loyalty.

The coolest part about them is that they have been recognized as one of the best guard dogs by the American Kennel Club.

They can weigh up to 150 pounds and grow as tall as 30 inches. Another thing about them is that they go along with other pets and dogs very well.

Now let’s come to the question, do they drool a lot?

Like every Mastiff breed, you might find some amount of drooling, but you won’t find them drooling heavily. They only drool when they are hungry or have any issues.

3: Presa Canario

Press Cannario not only drool less but they also shed a lot lesser than other Mastiffs.

Apart from those two incredible qualities. They have a couple of other very impressive qualities as well, they are great guard dogs and they don’t bark unnecessarily.

However, these dogs can be angry at times if they are not trained well. Make sure to give them proper training, so that they don’t show aggression towards animals and family members.

Furthermore, they need exercise. Even though they have huge sizes, they do need 40 to 50 minutes of exercise every day.

If you don’t give them enough exercise they might become lazy and fat, and I guess no one wants a dog like that.

4: English Mastiffs

An elephant-sized dog, English mastiffs are fourth on our list. They are the biggest dogs in terms of size, they can weigh up to an insane 230 pounds, and their height can reach up to 30 inches.

English mastiffs do drool, but not as much as people think. The only time they drool is when you are feeding them or if they are feeling hungry.

This giant dog breed needs a lot of food, they need a purely meat-based diet. Their hunger is the main reason behind their drooling. However, if you keep them full, they won’t drool.

Also, their drooling can increase in the summer season.

I highly recommend this breed if you have a big space and a decent budget.

5: Boerboel

Like the English Mastiff, this breed is also massive. They can weigh up to 200 pounds, and their height can grow up to 27 inches.

They have a strong food drive, so you may find them drooling sometimes, however, if they aren’t feeling any hunger, they hardly drool.

6: The Korean Dosa Mastiff

The Korean Dosa Mastiffs are very rare. Their price can go up to 300,000$. According to estimates, only a few hundred Korean Mastiffs have left.

Their rarity and uniqueness make them one of the most desired dog breeds. Only millionaires can afford them.

The specialty of this breed is that they have very loose skin. If we talk about drooling, they don’t drool extensively, you can manage their drooling easily.

7: Tibetan Mastiffs

Tibetan mastiff is another breed that drools less. They don’t drool as much as French mastiffs and Bullmastiffs, but they aren’t as clean as Dogo Argentino or Broholmer.

Tibetan Mastiffs hate hot weather. They will drool more in hot weather, so make sure to pet Tibetan mastiff only if the place where you live is colder than 25 degrees Celsius or 77 Fernahite.

When And Why Do Mastiffs Drool?

Drooling is a natural process in dogs. It helps them eat and digest food.

The level of drooling can be different in different dogs. For instance, a Dogue de Bordeaux always drools more than a Dogo Argentino.

A Dogo Argentino no matter how hungry they are will never drool as much as Dogue de Bordeaux, it is simply because of genetics, Dogue de Bordeaux’s genetics is different than Dogo Argentino’s.

However, problems occur when a Dogo Argentino begins drooling as much as Dogue de Bordeaux. It indicates that there is something wrong with the health of Dogo Argentino.

If you notice your dog drooling excessively without any reason, rush to the nearest pet clinic for help!

Now, when do mastiffs drool?

Mastiffs start to drool when they are feeling excitement, heat, fear, or nervousness. They might also start drooling if they are feeling hungry.

Once that feeling of fear, excitement, and nervousness is gone, they will stop drooling. If they don’t stop drooling, then contact a veterinarian as it could be a sign of disease.

My Recommendation

For me, English Mastiffs are always going to be the best. They are giant yet very humble dogs. They love their owner and can work as super guard dogs.

They don’t drool excessively as well. They are the ultimate pick!

But there are some things you must know. They need a big space. At least a space where they can move their body without much problem.

They have a short life as well. They hardly live 10 years, so that is another concern you should know. Also, they eat a lot, so your budget might get a hit.

If the problems I mentioned aren’t big of a problem for you, go for English Mastiffs, they are the best!
