English mastiffs are humble giants. They go well with both kids and adults, they are family dogs. But even after having so many qualities, many people still avoid petting them.

Some avoid them because of their huge size, and some avoid them because this breed is always hungry and drools a lot.

They are not wrong about size. English Mastiffs are one of the largest dog breeds. They can weigh up to 230 pounds or 104 kilos, which is quite mindblowing for a dog.

If you want English mastiffs as a pet, you would need a big apartment or house.

But what about drooling, do they drool a lot? Is there any truth to it?

You’ll find your answer here in this post.

Do English Mastiffs Drool A Lot?

Yes, they do drool, but not as much as you might think. They drool only when they are hungry, and when it’s their food time.

So if your giant buddy isn’t hungry, you’ll not find any drool dropping through his giant mouth.

In fact, a big YouTube channel (4 Ever Green) didn’t even rank English mastiffs in their list of top 10 dog breeds that drool like crazy.

You can watch the video here.

However, most giant dog breeds drool, so keep this in mind before going for a mastiff.

Also, drool shouldn’t be a big issue for you as English mastiffs have many more positive qualities than bad ones.

My friend’s English mastiff protects him and follows him everywhere he goes. They are true guard dogs.

English mastiffs are very loyal, in fact, I believe they are one of the best mastiffs out there.

I highly suggest English mastiffs if you want a cuddly bear-like dog that is cool with kids and a little bit of drooling isn’t a big problem for you.

Do English Mastiffs Eat A Lot?

English mastiffs are always hungry, they eat like crazy. In fact, some English mastiffs eat as much as 7 pounds of food a day, which is quite astonishing.

You should never pet a dog like an English Mastiff if you have a budget problem as these giants will surely impact your monthly budget.

They love eating muscle meat, organ meat, and bones.

Also, never reduce their meals. You should never give them less than two meals a day. According to experts, mastiffs should be fed two meals per day throughout their lives.

And, you must not feed milk to your mastiff after it turns 8 weeks old. Milk is high in fat and sugar, so giving milk to your mastiff daily may make him fat and slow, and I guess no one wants a slow lazy dog.

Do English mastiffs drool as much as Neapolitan mastiffs?

No, they don’t drool more than Neapolitan mastiffs. In fact, English mastiffs are not even in the top 10. Again, don’t worry about drooling issues in English mastiffs, if you can afford to pet them, you should as they are very loyal, cute, and humble dogs.

Btw, Neapolitan mastiffs are also very kind dogs, but they are not as big as English mastiffs, and Neapolitan mastiffs can sometimes be overly protective, so training them early is really important.

Both are good dogs, but I still prefer English mastiffs as they drool less and are more energetic.

How much do English mastiffs drool?

There is no specific amount; it depends on many things like, how much they are eating in a day, how active they are, and whether are there any medical issues with them or not.

A normal English mastiff is manageable. I mean you can clean their drool easily with a dry towel. They don’t drool too much.

How to Stop English Mastiff From Drooling?

  • Excitement

Most mastiff dogs when they feel excited start to drool. Food and toys can make your dog excited, so never show your dog food when it’s not his food time.

If you are showing him food, then you must give him some food, otherwise, he will start drooling.

Not only with dogs but it happens with humans too. When we see tasty foods, our mouth starts watering. Just like that, dogs also can’t control themselves when they see tasty food, their mouth will automatically start producing drool.

Also, don’t give your dog sugary foods as it may make him lazy.

  • Keep Your Dog Active

It has been observed that dogs who don’t exercise much drool more than those who walk, run, and jump daily. Keeping your dog active can not only reduce drool but can also make your dog much more healthy and more muscular. Your dog will also live longer.

English mastiffs don’t live longer. They have a life span of about 10 years. So it’s crucial to keep your English mastiff active!

  • Dog Anxiety

Excessive drooling also known as hypersalivation can happen in dogs due to several reasons, like anxiety, fear, and nervousness.

For instance, if your dog starts to drool excessively when going for a ride in the car, it indicates that he doesn’t like being in a car, the thought of him being in the car makes him feel overly anxious, and that anxious feeling forces his body to produce more drool.

The best way to fix this problem is to meet a dog expert as soon as you can. A good dog trainer can reduce anxiety, fear, and nervousness in your dog. But it might take time, and it depends on a lot of things.

  • Dental Hygiene

Oral problems can also lead to excessive drooling. Keep your dog’s oral health good as abscessed tooth roots, broken teeth, and gingivitis can cause pain and drooling.

You need veterinary attention if your dog is going through oral problems. Drooling will never stop if it doesn’t fix quickly, so meet a veterinarian asap!
