You can only really appreciate a Great Dane’s enormous size when you see one in person. They are true giants.

But if you’re curious about how enormous they are in relation to people, other dogs, or other animals, read this post to find out.

How Big Great Danes Are Compared To Humans

Category Great Dane Size Human Size (Average)
Height 28 to 34 inches at the shoulder Varies widely (4.8 to 6.2 feet for adults)
Length 30 to 34 inches from chest to rump Varies widely based on proportions
Weight 140 to 175 pounds (males) Varies widely (120 to 200+ pounds for adults)
Human and Great Dane Size Table

As shown in the table, Great Danes are not as tall as humans; the typical male height is above 5 feet 5 inches, whereas Great Danes barely reach 3 feet.

However, there is tight competition in terms of weight, since male Great Danes can reach more than 140 pounds when fully matured.

Overall, Great Danes appear massive when viewed alongside humans; here are some pictures to give you a better idea of their size:

This image nicely depicts the massive structure of the Great Danes. As you can see in the above picture, the legs of the Great Dane are reaching the head of the woman.

The woman appears to be about 5 feet tall, thus she is not a very short woman. Not only is the Great Dane’s height prominent in the image, but so is its weight.

The adorable photo up top captures the relationship between the dog and its owner.

You might have noticed that the puppy is not small in size.

Puppies of great danes develop far quicker than puppies of other breeds because great danes belong to the mastiff family, they are inherently taller and heavier.

In the image above, both great danes appear absurdly large; one of them nearly reaches the owner’s shoulder.

Another brilliant picture showing how big great danes can become.

A child embracing a dane is a lovely sight. The girl appears to be much smaller than her great dane companion.

Compared To Other Breeds

Great Danes seem enormous when they are in front of people, but how large do they look around other dog breeds?

Well, the story doesn’t really change, though, because they still seem enormous in comparison to other breeds.

In the picture above, the bully is sitting; you can still guess the size difference. Even if the bully stands up, it still won’t reach the shoulders of the Great Dane.

In terms of power and bravery, both breeds are the same, but the size difference between them is crazy. An American Pitbull Terrier can only grow up to 21 inches.

This image nicely captures the size of a Great Dane. The Goldendoodle is the only dog that does not appear to be short in the picture. The rest of the breeds in the picture appear significantly smaller than the Dane.

This is a pretty interesting image that I’d like to show you. The Chihuahua is the smallest dog breed, and the Great Dane is the largest; they look fantastic walking together.

Compared To Other Animals

Other animals, if not canines, must be taller and larger than great danes. True, certain creatures are far larger than any dog in the world, including great danes, but not all animals are larger.

Moneky is a highly intelligent, energetic, and playful animal; like dogs, monkeys come in different sizes.

The photograph above is really interesting; you can see the monkey playing with two great danes that are much larger.

If I were to describe which animal, apart from dogs, looks like a Great Dane, I would choose a horse. Horses, like great danes, are tall, slim, and muscular, with a lot of energy. When they are together, the size difference is obvious; a horse is much larger, but great danes do not look to be particularly small.

Are They Powerful?

Great Danes are one of the most powerful dogs; they can even drag lightweight people if they use their full power.

This is why it is critical to train it as soon as possible; otherwise, handling it can be extremely difficult.

Furthermore, they have powerful canine teeth, a high bite force, and a protective instinct, making them a veritable nightmare for intruders.

They are also fearless; they will not back down, even if the challenger is considerably stronger. Overall, they are not only powerful but also excellent fighters.

Do They Need a Big House?

If you live in an apartment and want a Great Dane, this question must have crossed your mind at least once.

They can live in an apartment if your apartment is big enough, but they are not made for apartments because they enjoy roaming around their property, guarding, and releasing energy while playing.

Keeping them in a limited space where they cannot expend their energies can lead to frustration and destructive behavior. So, the answer is yes, they require a large house with a backyard.

Should I Get Them As The First Time Owner?

When choosing a dog for the first time, you should never choose a large, strong breed. Due to their size and strength, great Danes require an owner with some level of experience who understands how to manage a large breed.

Many first-time dog owners choose huge breeds like Great Danes and Cane Corsos, which they eventually come to regret.

Those who are new to owning dogs should go for a breed that is known for its friendliness; a large, sociable breed like Newfoundlands is one such breed.

You will learn a great deal and acquire valuable expertise by beginning with an amiable breed.

Conclusion

Great Danes are big canines that appear enormous when they are with humans, other breeds, and animals. They are not only massive but also quite powerful; they know how to defend themselves and their owners.

However, they are not suggested for first-time owners because controlling them can be difficult.

I hope you liked this post.
