It hurts when our dog is stubborn and refuses to eat what we want him to eat. Picky eaters are a genuine issue!

Let’s look at 15 breeds that are fussy eaters in this post, let’s get started!

1: Chihuahua

Chihuahuas are among the smallest dog breeds, but don’t let their size fool you; they are one of the bravest and most aggressive dog breeds.

Chihuahuas can be fussy eaters; in fact, the majority of Chihuahuas dislike meals that other dogs enjoy.

But don’t rule out buying a Chihuahua just yet, because not all Chihuahuas are the same.

Some Chihuahuas eat anything their owners give them, so it really depends on the individual.

2: Shih Tzu

Shih Tzus are my favorite toy dog breed; they are adorable, intelligent, and energetic, but their only flaw is that they are finicky eaters.

They only consume what they enjoy, and the stuff they don’t like, they smell and turn their heads, or they don’t bother smelling at all.

3: Yorkshire Terrier

Yorkshire Terriers are quite picky eaters; in fact, they will refuse to eat anything until you feed them the meal they want. It can be quite annoying at times.

However, as we all know, no two dogs are alike; some Yorkies may not be finicky eaters, but the majority of them are.

Additionally, adolescent Yorkies are more prone to such behavior. They, like humans, develop a perceived taste for diverse flavors and food textures and stick to it.

4: Dachshund

Dachshunds, whether Mini Dachshunds or Standard Dachshunds, are notorious for being fussy eaters.

Most of the time, it is the owner’s fault; owners end up turning their Dachshund into a fussy eater.

Owners occasionally overfeed their Dachunds, and the dogs gradually develop the habit of just eating tasty treats rather than traditional kibble.

If your dog is young, do not overfeed treats because it will not only develop this terrible habit, but it may also create obesity and affect their appetite.

5: Maltese

Insta – cooper_meno_maltese

Maltese have a bad reputation for being fussy eaters; however, this is not true of all Maltese; some Maltese have no difficulty with food and will eat whatever their owners bring to them.

Maltese pups and dogs also prefer canned wet food to dry kibble.

According to experts, dry food is a better choice for dogs than canned wet food because wet food includes more fat, can cause dental problems, and can cause bowel troubles.

So, you need to make sure the dry food you are presenting to your Maltese or any other dog breed is appealing to them.

You can add olive oil or fish oil to make it more appetizing. Also, be certain that the food is fresh.

6: Pomeranian

Their high intelligence, attractive coat, and adaptability make them an ideal breed to have; yet, Pmeranians, like the other breeds described here, are picky eaters.

They also get bored with food, so you may need to provide them with various meals every few days. You can’t blame them for this, because just like people, dogs too don’t want to eat the same meal over and over again.

So, if you have a pomeranian or are thinking about getting one, be sure to feed it the best foods, and more importantly, varied foods every few days.

7: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is arguably the cutest and most beautiful dog breed. Indeed, it holds the top spot on my list of the best tiny calm dog breeds.

These lovely dogs are laid-back, peaceful, and sociable, but they may be fussy eaters, especially when they’re young.

However, you can take some action to break this specific habit of them. If your dog prefers wet food to dry, you can mix in some wet food or add toppings to make the meal look more appetizing.

8: French Bulldog

French Bulldogs are the most well-known dogs in the United States; they are extremely attractive, adaptable, quiet, and sociable, but they, like the other breeds featured here, have a reputation for being picky eaters.

Frenchies establish their taste at a young age and keep to it until you do something to change it.

The main cause for so many fussy eaters among Frenchies is that their owners feed them table scraps or too many treats.

As previously said, giving your dog too many treats might lead to finicky eating habits.

However, not every Frenchie is the same; some Frenchies, particularly those whose owners do not overfeed them, are not picky eaters.

9: Boston Terrier

Boston terriers are a medium-sized, highly energetic dog breed from Boston, Massachusetts.

Despite the fact that the Boston Terrier originated in 1875, its popularity has not waned.

Unfortunately, Boston Terriers are pretty finicky when it comes to eating.

Boston Terriers have a wide range of personalities. While some dogs will eat any food scrap in sight, others are more choosy and quickly grow tired of their regular dog food.

Boston Terriers require high-protein dry food to keep healthy and fit, and if a Boston Terrier isn’t eating dry kibble, you can change the attraction of that dry kibble by adding toppings or Fish oil.

10: Papillon

The Papillon is a petite breed that originated in France and is recognized for its liveliness, friendliness, and alertness. They are also incredibly adorable due to their distinctive hairy ears.

Some Papillons, however, can be picky eaters. Many owners remark that they do not eat low meat content kibble; instead, they prefer premium kibble with at least 75% meat content.

As treats, some Papillon owners have learned that their dogs enjoy yogurt sticks and fish skins.

Overall, they have a very distinct flavor, and they are one of the breeds to avoid if you dislike finicky eaters.

11: Bichon Frise

Bichon Frise are little white curly-haired dogs recognized for their friendliness, liveliness, and energy.

They are relatively little, weighing just 10 to 20 pounds and reaching barely 12 inches in length.

Because of their modest size, they are an excellent alternative for anyone looking for a dog breed that can live comfortably in an apartment.

Unfortunately, most Bichon frise are known to be picky eaters. However, you may observe that they get less choosy over time.

To lessen their choosy behavior, you can also train them or make their food more appetizing.

12: Japanese Chin

Japanese Chins are notorious for being picky eaters, but when they are very hungry, they will eat anything you put in front of them, so it all depends on their state of hunger.

Furthermore, Japanese Chins require high-quality protein-rich food because a low-protein, low-nutrient diet can promote fatigue, shedding, and even bone weakness.

If you have this breed and it is picky about food, you can modify it to make it more enticing to it.

You can add protein-based items like chicken, beef, turkey, lamb, duck, eggs, and fish on top of the kibble or you may mix the kibble with those foods to make the meal more enticing to your Chin.

13: Italian Greyhound

Due to their distinctive coat, friendly nature, and small height, Italian Greyhounds are one of the loveliest and most unique-looking dogs.

When we look at their bodies, we immediately think that this breed must be a finicky eater because they are so thin.

However, it is important to remember that Greyhounds are a naturally light-built breed with little mass (in terms of muscle or fat). That is entirely genetic.

The Italian Hounds are surprisingly not choosy; some are, but not all. Iggies are either extremely fussy eaters or the polar opposite.

14: Shiba Inu

Insta – chiasa.shibainu

According to experts, most Shiba Inus are picky eaters, and because of their obstinate temperament, it is difficult to break this negative behavior.

Even though Shiba Inus are stubborn, you must do something to break this tendency of theirs, as the condition may worsen over time.

Stop offering them too many treats since they may become accustomed to filling their stomachs with treats while disregarding actual meals.

The ideal strategy is to combine their favorite foods with the kibble. You can combine 20% of what they like with 80% of what you want to feed them.

15: Afghan Hound

Insta – calandrasbakery

One of the most majestic-looking breeds of dogs is the Afghan Hound. Compared to most dog breeds, they have a completely different appearance due to their unusual silky coat.

Though certain Afgahan Hounds may exhibit this behavior, Afgahan Hounds are not known for being fussy eaters. This trait can be eliminated with the correct training.

All things considered, afghan hounds are fantastic pets, and since very few of them are naturally picky eaters, they might be a perfect fit for you.

Do Dogs Grow Out Picky Eating Behaviour?

Yes, they can grow out of this behavior, but you will need to make some changes, such as reducing treats and making the meals they avoid more appetizing.

Remember, dogs are not like people; they have distinct food preferences, but if they don’t receive what they want, they won’t go hungry; they will eat whatever food you offer to survive.

So you can certainly break this habit!

How long will a picky dog go without eating?

A picky dog can only go up to 8 or 10 hours without eating; beyond that, signals from an empty stomach trigger a hunger response in the dog’s brain. For this reason, it is ideal to feed your adult dog at least two meals a day.

Once more, if fussy dogs are truly hungry, they can eat the food they dislike.

Conclusion

Picky eaters are often hard to manage, and sadly, many breeds have a negative reputation for being picky eaters, including Shih Tzus, Yorkshire Terriers, Daschunds, and Maltese.

However, with some modification and a little amount of strictness, you may be able to break this terrible habit of your dog, but keep in mind that everything takes time, so stay calm and keep making efforts to break this behavior.

I hope you liked this post.
