Cane Corsos are large, muscular dogs known for their bravery and protective nature. People believe that keeping them in a small space isn’t a good idea, and Cane Corsos needs a big space to live a good life.

Well, in this post, I’ll answer everything. We’ll discuss whether or not they can live in an apartment and how much space they exactly need.

Let’s get started!

Can They Live in An Apartment?

Although they can live in apartments, cane corsos are not meant for apartment living; instead, they prefer to move around, guard their territory, and live in big spaces.

In comparison to other mastiff breed dogs, they are also fairly athletic. Therefore, while keeping them in an apartment might not be the best choice, they can live there and even have a happy existence if you give them enough playtime and exercise each day.

If you don’t give them enough opportunities for play or walks, they can start acting out. It won’t be good if they start to become bored and chew on certain things to relieve their boredom.

How Much Space Do Cane Corsos Need?

The USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) states that you can actually determine the minimum amount of space your dog need. They state that a dog that is thirty inches long will require a minimum of nine square feet of area.

Thus, we are able to determine the bare minimum of space required by a Cane Corso. Given that cane corsos typically range in length from 41.5 to 55 inches, a minimum of 15 to 25 square feet would be required for them.

Keep in mind that this is the very minimum of area needed for Cane Corsos. They require a lot more room than that to live comfortably.

In fact, some experts advise against getting a Cane Corso unless you have a backyard because these dogs require space to exercise their high activity levels.

Can They Live Outside?

They can survive outside provided the weather is suitable. Even though a Cane Corso’s double coat protects them from harmful heat and cold, it’s still advisable to keep your dog inside during extremely hot or cold weather.

Keep them inside your house if the temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius and the same if it rises above 30 degrees.

Do They Bark?

Cane Corsos have a powerful bark that is loud enough to frighten intruders. Cane Corsos are not noted for their high bark rates, although they do bark when they perceive a threat.

Don’t worry, your neighbors will live in peace.

If your Cane Corso starts barking loudly and isn’t stopping, you can do the following to quiet it down.

  • Identify and address potential triggers that cause barking. This could include strangers approaching the house, other animals, or environmental stimuli.
  • Use curtains or blinds to limit visual stimuli, and consider background noise to mask sounds that might trigger barking.
  • Cane Corsos are intelligent and active dogs. Engage them in regular mental and physical activities to prevent boredom.
  • Puzzle toys, obedience training, and regular exercise can help channel their energy in positive ways.
  • Early training and socialization are crucial for Cane Corsos. Teach them basic commands like “quiet” or “enough.”
  • Expose them to various people, places, and situations to reduce anxiety and reactivity.

Can We Leave Them Alone Inside an Apartment?

On the one hand, leaving your Cane Corso alone can be beneficial to them because it can boost their confidence and teach them valuable lessons such as how to calm themselves down, but on the other hand, Cane Corsos are prone to separation anxiety; in fact, experts recommend that you do not leave your Cane Corso alone for more than 4 hours because it can be extremely painful for them.

You’ll also need to teach them from a young age that it’s okay to be alone in order for them to be comfortable being left alone.

Final Words…

Although they may live in apartments, cane corsos require enough playtime or walks to be happy. They prefer large areas to roam about and guard the land; they are not meant to live in apartments.

All in all, you can absolutely get a Cane Corso for your new apartment, but don’t forget to make sure your sweet Corso gets enough exercise.
